Today marks the first day of Daylight Saving Time in Utah. Spring is particularly difficult because it feels like we "lose" an hour. Add Leap Year into the mix and it feels like the groundhog, the frog, and the clock have all gone crazy! This week also happens to have a full moon in the forecast and then you've got the icing on top of a swell week with Friday being the 13th. All of these things combined are the makings of every teacher's nightmares but I've got some suggestions to help make your week run a little smoother in spite of lunar happenings, lighter evenings, and superstitious days.
First, your students can feel when you are anxious or frustrated about certain things. I suggest turning on some nice piano music when you get to school tomorrow morning. Being alone in my classroom for those first 45 minutes can be stressful if I am running around trying to get things prepared for the day but something about having relaxing music playing in the background keeps me grounded. I also suggest keeping this music playing as your students enter your classroom. As much as it helps you stay calm, it helps them as well. Second, greet each student at the door and tell them how much you missed them over the weekend. For some students, you are the only happy face they have seen for the past 3 days. Letting them know they are loved can set the tone for their all-day behavior. Third, and probably most important: have something for your students to get started on the moment they enter your classroom. Students who don't have a structured activity are more likely to start causing problems. If they have something they are expected to work on, this lessens the likelihood of problems arising first thing in the morning.
Teachers! You got this! Hit snooze an extra time tomorrow if necessary, but don't let the worry of what COULD happen take control over your classroom and your emotions. YOU are in charge of the tone that is set each day in your room. Your students will take cues from you; make them great!
What things do you like to do to set the tone for a stellar week? How do you keep the kids from going crazy when everything seems to be working against you? Sound off in the comments! I can't wait to hear your suggestions!
Have an awesome week!
